Tracks

A track is a ring of data on a disk. Unlike a CompactDisc™ (which has one long spiral for a track), the tracks on a floppy or hard disk are a set of concentric rings.

For MFM-formatted disks, the number of sectors per track is constant (but varies by format between 5 and 26). Here are some typical values:

Zones

For standard GCR-formatted disks, the number of sectors per track and recording bit-rate depends on the zone (track# range):
