REM [ comment ]
Include comments within a program
The REM statement (short for remark) is used to include comments in a program. This will typically be notes about the purpose of variables or subroutines. Of course the comment could be about anything, like a joke or a copyright message. It is usually not a copyright notice because BASIC never displays the remarks unless the user decides to LIST the program. * REM may be used as a command in direct mode, but it serves virtually no purpose because the comment is not stored in a program. When REM is encountered, BASIC immediately stops processing the current line; in a program it continues on the next line (if any). Any statement(s) that follow REM on the same line will never be executed. Because ASCII NUL is used to terminate lines of BASIC text, the comment may not include any null characters; all other characters are permissable. For some reason, the text of the comment is not tokenized. Although it is not necessary (because the comments are never executed), it would save memory (and thus improve speed) in some cases.
